An hour south east of Kandy

Rukgala Retreat is a boutique hotel designed to offer a retreat-style experience for guests keen to escape the more traditional resorts.

Without subscribing too stiffly to notions of ‘wellness’ it offers an active, healthy stay with yoga, guided hikes, biking and wild swimming, all readily available.

With just 10 guest bedrooms the property has a relaxed, informal style; dining space is sometimes shared and not often a la carte.

Set on the shores of the Victoria Lake, the backdrop is stunning and provides ample opportunity for exploration. Village life nearby gives a great taste of rural Sri Lanka.

The Rooms

Guests are most typically offered The Top House, with 4 rooms, or The Garden Cottage, again with 4.

Top House rooms are large, with four-poster beds and ensuite bathrooms. Rooms open to private balconies with amazing views of the lake and Knuckles Mountains beyond.

Garden Cottage rooms are marginally smaller but boast standalone bathtubs in their en-suite bathrooms. A little lower down, the views are not quite so grand, but again the rooms open up onto a terrace that looks over the lake.

All Garden Cottage rooms have a mezzanine level with an extra single bed – well suited for families, or ideal as a little daytime escape spot.

What’s to do

Within easy reach of Kandy, guests can enjoy the attractions of Sri Lanka’s second largest city.

More appealing, though, may be time spent at the property. Yoga and meditation classes led by experienced teachers are on offer twice daily. Ayurvedic treatments and massage are easily arranged.

Hikes, bike rides and boating on the lake are organised and overseen by Rukgala’s own naturalist and guide.

Though boasting a remote feel, Rukgala is also within a short Tuk Tuk ride of Victoria Golf Club and so golf and horse riding, provided there, are offer too.

To the south-east of Kandy, Rukgala sits about 4 hour’s drive from the airport at Katunayake (Colombo).

It borders the Victoria Lake and fringes the Knuckles Mountains which offer stunning hikes in pretty untouched territory.

Road travel from Colombo to Kandy (best stop for Rukgala) is long and slow but train rides are more pleasant. The seaplane can also land on the lake making a transfer to Rukgala remarkably quick and easy. Flights, of course, can be taken from the property down to Galle and the southern coast.

Food & Drink

Rukgala has teamed up with some amazingly talented and creative folk to design a very special and unique menu. They’ve focused on showing off wonderful Sri Lankan flavours but also coming up with vegan and vegetarian options that don’t rely entirely on the ‘rice
and curry’ staple. You leave feeling refreshed, healthy and energised which is a rare treat on a holiday.

Daily changing menus with three different concepts are on offer starting from a vegan base and building in vegetarian and ‘flexitarian’ options. Though Rukgala is in a fairly remote part of the country, there are, for those not entirely taken with the concept, some alternatives within pretty easy reach.

The pool sits conveniently next to the shala for a refreshing post-yoga dip. With a large wrap-around deck and plenty of comfy bean bags and loungers togo around, it has a great communal vibe and has a nice little shallow section for non-swimmers.

Rukgala has a slightly wild feel to it so may not suit families with very young children. Yoga and meditation of course also not ideal for noisier groups.

Older families, though, especially those with an active/outdoorsy sense of adventure will love Rukgala and be welcomed very warmly!
