Samudra Beach House

Samudra House is a gorgeous, relatively recently built but timelessly styled beach-side villa with direct beach access. It sits on a great stretch of fairly quiet golden beach, not too far (15 minutes) from the busier strip of Galle.  Amongst stiff competition, Samudra has to be one of, if not the loveliest beach villa on this southern stretch past Galle.

Two large main bedrooms sit side-by-side in front of a decadent pool that runs to well-kept lawns and the beautifully quiet beach of Habaraduwa a few yards beyond. This place really does nail it on style and attention to detail; the architecture the work of Jayatilaka Sumangala and the envy-inducing interiors the handiwork of owners Pip and Christian.

There’s nothing not to love about Samudra.

The Rooms

The house has just two large ensuite guest bedrooms but has plenty of great living space – open plan kitchen and sitting room, both overlooking the pool, garden and sea.

There’s also a smaller third bedroom around the corner and up the stairs which can be used if required. It is however, non-air-conditioned and a little tucked away so not prime relative to the main rooms.

The rooms are a mix of old antique charm with a light contemporary feel. Kingsize beds, armchairs and writing desks feature in both bedrooms. Seriously high ceilings and clever design give already large rooms that extra space. Double vanities and indoor/outdoor split ensuite bathrooms are the definition of beach-side luxury. Both bedrooms open onto a terrace/sitting area that looks over the pool and beach beyond.

What’s to do

A good number of Samudra’s guests stay firmly, and happily, put but you’re within touching distance of Galle Fort with its lovely maze of boutiques and gem stores.

Head the other way to Mirissa for some of the best whale watching (we’d lean towards a morning cruise on Jade) or shimmy inland to visit tea estates and factories churning out the island’s best-known ‘commodity’.

Village bike rides, boat trips, yoga classes and spa treatments are all equally easily organised.

Samudra sits on Sri Lanka’s famed southern coast about 15 minutes drive south past Galle.

Coming from Galle you just stick on the coast road (the Matara Road) through Unawatuna and Thalpe until you reach Habaraduwa. The house is on the beachside of the road (of course) and signed discreetly so drive slowly keeping an eye out. If you see the Kahanda Kanda Beach Club (immediately next door) you’ve gone a few yards too far.

The noise and bustle of the coast road belies the perfect calm as you get inside the villa walls reaching a little beach oasis.

Sri Lanka’s south coast gets the best of the island’s weather through January to April but impressions of seasonality are often unfairly exaggerated. May and June can bring choppy seas but temperatures are around the same and the sun often out.

July and August see things get calmer again, while rains can come in October and November. Such a beautiful house, though, you’d be very happy ‘cooped’ up at Samudra on a stormy day.

Out for the evening

If it’s action you are after head to Galle Fort for a plethora of choice of restaurants and bars. But we think it’s equally lovely to sit poolside and take in the panoramic sunset views from your private villa.

Samudra has three permanent staff to look after you. Sanjeeva runs the house day to day, setting up rooms and keeping all in good order. Ruwan is the house chef – much lauded. And Sunethra helps with the housekeeping and child-minding as required!

Food & Drink

Not many private villas impress on the food front to the extent that Samudra does.  Ruwan is universally praised by guests – many of whom end up foregoing other spots to eat-in most nights. Dining space in a cute Ambalama to the side of the garden.

Ruwan’s dishes alongside the drinks rustled up by houseman Sanjeeva mean you’ll be expertly catered for.

Samudra has a large 55 x 15 feet pool situated in a beautiful garden with direct access to one of Sri Lanka’s best beaches.

This is the perfect holiday house for a family looking for private beach-side living. The two bedrooms are perfectly positioned to be close enough to each other yet with enough privacy between them. The third room in the back of the house is ideal for a family travelling with perhaps, a nanny.
