Green House

In Digana, 45 minutes east of Kandy

The eponymous Green House is a prime example of contemporary tropical architecture – a mostly glass and steel construction that sits perfectly on the slopes leading down to the Victoria Reservoir.

It’s wonderfully atypical of the types of properties in the area, and across the island generally – no colonial tributes here.

On the Victoria Golf & Country Club estate it’s the ideal base for golfers or, indeed, those just keen to explore this quiet, cultural part of the island.

It’s set on five levels with a main living and dining area on the second that opens on to terraces perfect for drinking and dining.

The Rooms

The Green House rents on an exclusive basis and can sleep from 1 – 10 guests, making it a very intimate place for couples or a fun place for family and friends.

There are five bedrooms in all with two double rooms and a twin sit on the 1st floor – downstairs from the living area – and another two connect and share a bathroom on the third floor.

All have great views out onto the gardens with the master suite on the first floor boasting the prime spot and the view of the lake to go with it.

What’s to do

The house is perfectly placed for those taking to the award-winning golf course – a short tuk tuk ride through the estate. Non-golfers may fancy the grass court tennis, swimming pool or horse-riding all on offer at the club.

Bike rides, guided treks, even fishing trips with local villagers in carved out canoes can be organised.
You’re less than an hour, too, from Kandy, the island’s cultural capital. A day trip there can see you visit…

o The famed Temple of the Tooth
o The Royal Botanical Gardens
o The Garrison Cemetery

The rock fortress of Sigiriya and the Cave Temples of Dambulla are also within reach of a healthy day trip.

Near Digana, just east of Kandy, you’re technically into the start of Sri Lanka’s dry zone so can, in theory, expect dry, warm weather for much of the year. Those who don’t fancy the drive can take the seaplane which lands and takes off just minutes from the Green House.

he 9.45 out of Colombo Fort station to Perideniya is a good option if heading from the capital and you’re ok with a bumpy, though very beautiful, journey.

Out for the evening

Unless you happen to be out for the afternoon in Kandy, it’s best to stay in. Down on the terrace overlooking the lake as the sun sets behind are a magical highlight of any stay.

Food & Drink

Kanishka is the ‘house boy’ par excellence. He’s on hand to serve what you fancy throughout the day. Typically you’ll discuss with him what you’d like and he will head off to Digana to buy the ingredients. He and the other house staff are both friendly and discreet and are there to make your stay as relaxing and enjoyable as possible.

Whilst there is no pool at The Green House, near by Victoria Golf & Country Club estate offers pool facilities. With a terrace space ideal for drinking in the views of lovely lush gardens that lead down to the Victoria Reservoir, we don’t think you will notice the lack of a pool too much.

Bring the whole family and settle in for a few days! There’s plenty of room for families of all sizes and you won’t feel like you are on top of each other with five levels of living areas.
