Kumu Beach

On an elevated strip of land overlooking Balapitiya Beach

Occupying an elevated, elongated strip of land overlooking boulder-scattered Balapitiya Beach, Kumu Beach puts most other beachfront properties to shame with it’s postcard perfect good looks.

Sister property to The Fort Bazaar and The Wallawwa, Kumu nails it in the style department with a Hamptons-meet-tropics vibe. The entire property boasts fabulous Indian Ocean panoramas fringed by rows of swaying coconut trees. There’s direct beach access of course and a sun kissed outlook from anywhere within the property.

The Rooms

All rooms are ocean facing, and have fantastic views. There are just ten rooms across three different categories; two Kumu Bedroom, four Oceanview Bedrooms and four Oceanview Suites.

Rooms are spacious with an open-plan layout and feature large canopied beds and a soft white colour palette.

Upgrade to a suite for a large living area and a terrace. Views are special, even from the shower. Suite 11 is our favourite for the corner aspect.

What’s to do

Don’t expect beach shacks and reggae music around here. Both Balapitiya town and the beach maintain a charming sleepy vibe. This is the kind of beach escape for being rather than doing.

Do bring a good book or two and spend some quality time between beachside and poolside. Late afternoon as the sun goes down the boulders on the beach provide a good vantage point to take in the views.

If needing a change of scenery head half an hour north to Bentota and enjoy an afternoon of meandering though mangroves on a boat trip on Bentota river. A trip to a cinnamon plantation and a temple are also options. Also in Bentota is Lunuganga, the stately estate of late Geoffrey Bawa, open for guided tours.

Twenty minutes south of Kumu you will find Hikkaduwa, the original beach party town of Sri Lanka’s south coast. Today, things are a little less wild but fun nevertheless. There are waves to catch, surf lessons to be had, sun loungers to settle on and enough juice bars to keep you satisfied for an afternoon.

Location

Kumu Beach is located on the south-west coast of the island about a third of the way from Galle to Colombo. Historical Galle Fort is 45 minute south along the coastal road and the international airport is an easy 2 hours on the highway.

Out for the evening

Head to Hikkaduwa if you are after a sun downer and a casual meal. Eating and drinking places come and go around here so don’t expect five star cuisine but do expect a fun vibe and an interesting mishmash of cuisines. Roti shops are plenty and definitely worth a try.

If you are after something a little more elegant then it’s worth venturing the extra 20 minutes south to Galle Fort. Dutch Hospital will have plenty of options for every taste- A Minute by Tuk Tuk has been a reliable favourite of ours for years. Head to Church Street Social to take things up a notch in the glam factor but do note the liquor licence here is still pending so worth checking the BYO status if opting to dine here.

Food & Drink

Expect to feast on an excellent international menu that champions seafood and local produce. There are plenty of local dishes on the menu too- and well worth a try. You would want to dine alfresco here, either by the pool or out on the deck. If wanting to retreat indoors for air-conditioned comfort, the restaurant and bar are cosy and comfortable.

Pool

The 23-metre infinity pool and the long timber sun deck are things of beauty. There are also canopied day-beds along the edge of the property overlooking the ocean for when you want to retreat to shady comforts.

Families

No Kid’s Clubs or activities for the littles here hence Kumu is better suited for families with over 12’s who can appreciate a quieter kind of a beach holiday.
