While white sandy beaches may be the first images that leaps to mind when you imagine Sri Lanka, the island is blessed with a mountainous interior making it a very special hiking destination. There are trails for all sorts of experience, from easy walks to more intense treks.
The Hill Country towns of Haputale, Bandarawela and Ella are surrounded by a blanket glorious tea estates making it a delightful hiking territory, criss-crossed by trails that serve up some ofSri Lanka’s best views.
Little Adam’s Peak and Ella Rock (both found in Ella) are twoof the most well known mini hikes that provide views of rolling hills and tea plantations. Hortons Plains National Park provides several hiking options from short one hour trails tolonger ones that span the entire plateau. On one edge of Horton Plains is World’s Edge, a sudden and steep 800 meter fall overlooking the countryside. On a clear day, even the ocean can be seen.
